General Resources and Guides
- The Herbst Library (Urban School's library's collection of books, video and audio tapes, and print magazines) is accessible at school and from home using the Catalog Search accessed from the library's home page.
- Access to
three history database resources: ProQuest, Historical
NYTimes, eLibrary.
- eLibrary provides
access to books, newspapers, periodicals, radio
and television transcripts, maps, and images.
- ProQuest provides
access to periodicals (magazines and newspapers). Each page provides
online help.

Primary Sources
- AMDOCS: primary source documents for the study of American History.
- IPL (The Internet Public Library) provides a wealth of access to documents, reference materials and all kinds, worldwide periodicals and newspapers. The lobby of the Internet Public Library, found at http://ww.ipl.org, provides easy access to the resources.
- One of the helpful reference tools of the IPL is POTUS (Presidents of the United States). This site provides access to Inaugural addresses, State of the Union speeches, facts about each President and much more.
- American Memory provides access to a multitude of primary sources on many topics. Access is provided
- by resource format (films, documents, pictures, sound files),
- by other
options such as broad topics, time period, people.
- by searching the collections (individually or as a group).
- New York Times On This Day provides images of front pages of New York Times and access to at least one full-text article from that day. (Site also includes access to the daily archives.)
- American Memory Today in History also provides access to historical events. To view other dates use this site's Archive .

Biographies:
- Many individual biographies are available at the Herbst Library. Search the Catalog for titles.
- Check also the Dictionary of American Biography (the DAB) for more in-depth biographies of deceased Americans. See REF/920.073/DIC/v19/Index (start with the index to select the correct volume).
- American National Biography ANB provides extensive hypertext biographies of many Americans.
- The Internet Public Library Reference Biographies provides access to many biography sites.
- Although Biography.com is a commercial site, it provides access to many biographies.
Internet Searching: Remember to cite all sources. Do this as you work. Especially for the Internet, it is very difficult to re-locate a resource!! For help with citation, use the citation guide.
Select your Search Engine carefully.
American Women's History: a research guide
National Security Archive Declassified U.S. Government documents are available from George Washington University. Some of these primary sources include "The Real Thirteen Days" (Cuban Missile Crisis), "Fujimori's Rasputin" (background documents that explain Peru's sudden shift in leadership), and the "U.S. and Chinese Nuclear Programs (1960-1964)." Many documents have blacked out areas that contain information that still might threaten national security.
The Internet Law Library. The site provides links to a large number of legal resources relating to American (federal and state) and foreign laws.

" from the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Site includes documents, links, and other materials relating to the cold War, international relations, Communism, and terrorism.
