Searching for an article with a specific date range: Example is specific to Caribbean History and Literature

Select ProQuest from Herbst Library Web page.
If accessing remotely, enter FirstClass Username and Password.

1. If starting on the full version of ProQuest, you will need to click on "databases selected" and switch to ProQuest Historical New York Times.
2. Click in box for PQ Hist. News. NYTimes
3. Click on Continue (You are now transferred to screen with searching information).
4. Click on Search Methods and select Advanced.
5. At bottom of screen, enter the date range desired: e.g. to locate the NYT with news of the Bay of Pigs invasion, enter the range 04/15/1961 to 04/19/1961
6. Click Add (You will note that the following then appears in the Search Box:
PDN(>04/15/1961) AND PDN(<04/19/1961)
7. Note: you may, if you wish, enter the above date line directly in the search box.
PDN= Published Date Number and is used to tell the database search engine to look for a date.
> and < are used to indicate greater than and less than (just as in math)
The parentheses are important.
8. Click in the Box for “Show Total number of articles” This helps you to know if your search is too broad (more than 50 articles) or too narrow.
9. To locate only articles on the front page, use DTYPE(front_page)
DTYPE = Display type
10. Add a name or keyword to limit your search. E.g. the search line for locating articles about the Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba would be
PDN(>06/05/1968) AND PDN(<06/08/1968) AND DTYPE(front_page) AND Cuba
11. Click on the full page icon to view the full page on which the article appears.
12. To view the individual articles, click on the article on the full page or click on the article icon or on the blue article title.
13. Articles in the PQ Historical NYTimes display in Adobe Acrobat Reader. They are images and do not show the citation data about the article. Be sure to note this.
14. You may make a bibliographic list by marking the article (click in the box at the left). After you have your entire list, select marked articles from the Results Menu. A list of your marked article will appear. This may be printed
