Gone With the Wind is released. The long flowing tails of the tuxedos inspire a extremely exaggerated suit. This is the birth of the Zoot Suit.

1942

Ana Van Ark joined the Royal Canadian Air force.

1943

José Diaz is found unconscious off a rural road in east Los Angels. He later dies.

1943

Twenty two mexican-american zoot suitors are arrested for the death of Diaz. They are all given one trial, and are tried on sixty six counts.

1943

Three are found guilty of 1st degree murder, nine guilty of 2nd degree murder, and five guilty of assault. Five were found not guilty.

June 7, 1943

200 sailors head into east LA, hunting down and beating any zoot suitor they could find.

1943

No sailors were ever found guilty of any crime.

1944

 

 

The Federal Appeals Court of California reversed all conviction due to lack of evidence.
